14-year-old driver killed in Upstate NY crash was speeding in stolen car, police say

A 14-year-old driver killed in an Upstate New York crash was speeding in a stolen car, police say.
According to WIVB, the male teenager was driving a 2017 Hyundai Elantra, which police said was stolen out of the city of Buffalo, when officers tried to pursue it Sunday night. The driver was going more than 80 miles per hour when he ran a red light at the intersection of Elmwood Avenue and Amherst Street, crashed into a vehicle going east on Amherst, and then spun and hit a third vehicle going north on Elmwood.
The Buffalo News reports the teen was pronounced dead at Erie County Medical Center. He was identified as a student at Southside Elementary, but his name is being withheld.
The drivers in other cars suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene, according to WIVB.
At a news conference Tuesday, Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said the crash is under investigation and is not being considered a police pursuit incident at this time. Gramaglia said an officer was attempting to initiate a traffic stop of an aggressive driver.
The Buffalo News reports the owner said they last saw the vehicle around 7 p.m. Sunday. Gramaglia said “other occupants” were in the vehicle after 8 p.m., including a person “hanging out of the passenger side sitting on the door and hanging on the roof.”
Only the 14-year-old boy was in the car at the time of the crash, police said.
The New York State Attorney General’s office has been contacted and will conduct their own investigation, WIVB reports.
